Kaoru Hasuike (born 1957) is a Japanese author, translator, and educator. Abducted by North Korea in 1978 while a student at Chuo University, he spent twenty-four years in the country before returning to Japan in 2002. After completing his university education, he became a faculty member at Niigata Sangyo University while building a distinguished career as a translator of Korean literature and a writer. His work is shaped by both his personal experience as an abductee and his deep understanding of the Korean Peninsula. His best-known book, "Back to the Peninsula," winner of the 8th Shincho Documentary Award, reflects on his journey through South Korea while revisiting his memories of North Korea and exploring the complex relationship between Japan and the Korean Peninsula.
