Vali Nasr is a political scientist who studies Iran and international relations in the Middle East. He is a professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and previously served as a senior adviser to the U.S. special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan. His history of relations between Shia and Sunni Muslims, “The Shia Revival: How Conflicts Within Islam Will Shape the Future,” explains how sectarian divisions intersect with Iraqi politics and the contest for influence between Iran and Saudi Arabia. Drawing on his experience in government, “The Dispensable Nation: American Foreign Policy in Retreat” criticizes U.S. policy toward Afghanistan and Pakistan. In “Iran’s Grand Strategy: A Political History,” he examines Iranian foreign policy through the country’s fears of external attack and internal fragmentation, rather than revolutionary ideology alone.
