Patricia Bell-Scott is an American scholar of women’s studies and Black feminism. She taught women’s studies and human development and family science at the University of Georgia, where she is professor emerita. She helped establish Black women’s studies as an academic field and served as a founding co-editor of SAGE: A Scholarly Journal on Black Women. In "The Firebrand and the First Lady: Portrait of a Friendship: Pauli Murray, Eleanor Roosevelt, and the Struggle for Social Justice," Bell-Scott uses letters and archival materials to trace the relationship between activist and lawyer Pauli Murray and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. The book shows how two women with different positions and experiences sustained a dialogue about racial segregation and gender discrimination and influenced each other’s public work. It was longlisted for the 2016 National Book Award for Nonfiction and won the Lillian Smith Book Award.
