Pat Barker (born 1943) is a British novelist whose fiction explores the psychological and social consequences of war, violence, and historical conflict. She won the Booker Prize in 1995 for "The Ghost Road." Her best-known novel, "The Silence of the Girls," retells Homer's *Iliad* through the eyes of Briseis, giving voice to the women whose experiences were largely absent from the epic and portraying the human cost of war from their perspective.
