Howard Norman (born 1949) is an American novelist and translator. His years in northern Canada, where he collected and translated Indigenous oral stories, have shaped much of his writing. His first novel, “The Northern Lights,” follows a boy growing up amid loss and change in northern Manitoba. “The Bird Artist” opens with a young bird painter’s confession to murder in a Newfoundland village. Both novels were finalists for the National Book Award. Norman has also drawn on his own life in the memoir “I Hate to Leave This Beautiful Place.” His children’s book “Trickster and the Fainting Birds” retells stories gathered from Algonquian storytellers, extending his long engagement with oral traditions beyond his novels.
