Herman Pontzer is an American evolutionary anthropologist and professor at Duke University. He studies how evolution, diet, physical activity, and environment shape energy expenditure and metabolism in humans and other primates. In “Burn: The Misunderstood Science of Metabolism,” he draws on fieldwork with Tanzania’s Hadza hunter-gatherers and other research to explain how the body adjusts its energy allocation as physical activity increases.
