H. R. McMaster, born in 1962, is a retired U.S. Army lieutenant general and military historian. He served in the Gulf War and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq before becoming National Security Advisor to President Donald Trump from 2017 to 2018. In “Battlegrounds: The Fight to Defend the Free World,” he examines the challenges posed by China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea while criticizing the strategic assumptions that shaped U.S. foreign policy after the Cold War.
