Harriet Rix is a British writer and tree science consultant whose work explores how trees use biochemistry to shape their surroundings. She grew up in Devon and studied biochemistry at the University of Oxford. After moving to Istanbul, she learned Turkish and wrote for Cornucopia magazine, then completed an MPhil in the history and philosophy of science at Cambridge, specializing in Ottoman science. She subsequently worked in landmine and explosive-ordnance clearance in the Middle East. Environmental degradation she witnessed in Iraq prompted her to enter the tree sector, and she returned to Britain in 2018. At the Tree Council she researched tree diseases, urban tree strategies and hedgerows, and served as secretary of Hedgelink. Her first book, The Genius of Trees (2025), examines trees as organisms that actively alter the conditions in which they live. Drawing on biochemistry and evolutionary history, it investigates their use of fire in reproduction, relationships with seed-dispersing animals, and ability to break down rock and create soil. Its origins include her encounters with diverse, resilient oaks in Iraq’s Zagros Mountains in 2014. Research trips for the book took her to the Amazon, Pakistan and California, among other places. It was longlisted for the Women’s Prize for Non-Fiction in 2026.
