Harriet A. Washington is a science writer, editor and scholar of medical history and ethics. Her work examines the formation of medical knowledge and institutions within relationships of race and power. Medical Apartheid traced medical experimentation on African Americans from the colonial era onward, considering consent, research benefits and the historical foundations of mistrust. It won the National Book Critics Circle Award. Carte Blanche investigated the erosion of protections surrounding medical consent. Renaissance Men, announced for 2026, focuses on three Black physicians: James McCune Smith, Rudolph Fisher and Louis T. Wright. It follows their medical contributions alongside resistance to racial exclusion and their involvement in American cultural life.
