Hannah Lillith Assadi is an American novelist of Palestinian and Jewish heritage who was raised in Arizona. She studied Middle Eastern studies and fiction writing at Columbia University and teaches fiction at Columbia’s School of the Arts and Pratt Institute. Her debut novel, “Sonora,” follows friendship, desire, and self-destruction against the landscape of the Arizona desert; it received the Rosenthal Family Foundation Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In 2018, Assadi was named one of the National Book Foundation’s “5 Under 35.” Her second novel, “The Stars Are Not Yet Bells,” explores love, betrayal, and buried secrets through an elderly woman losing her memory. Inspired by the life of Assadi’s late father, “Paradiso 17” traces a Palestinian man displaced during the Nakba as he moves across countries and continents in a lifelong search for home.
