H. G. Wells (1866–1946) was an English novelist, historian, and social critic. Drawing on his education in biology, he introduced subjects such as time travel, alien invasion, invisibility, and biological engineering into narratives that helped shape modern science fiction. He also wrote extensively about technological change, warfare, class inequality, and the possibility of world government. In “The Time Machine,” the divided future societies of the Eloi and the Morlocks become a critique of class divisions and the long-term consequences of industrialization in Victorian Britain.
