Yukari Hane is a translator from Swedish and Norwegian into Japanese. She graduated from the Faculty of Law at Osaka City University and completed a master’s program in law at Lund University. Her work focuses on nonfiction, including social issues, science, and nature writing, and also includes fiction. She began studying Swedish in her mid-forties. An interest in etymology led her to translate a book on word origins with its author’s permission and independently publish it as an ebook in 2018. Exploring the wildlife encountered during the renovation of a countryside cottage, Nina Burton’s “Notes from a Summer Cottage: The Intimate Life of the Outside World” appeared in Hane’s Japanese translation as “Mori no Raihoshatachi.” Encounters with bees and ants in the building and birds and foxes in the garden lead to reflections on animal behavior and the relationships between humans and other living things. Explaining the history, mechanisms, and social implications of artificial intelligence, Inga Strümke’s Norwegian-language “Maskiner som tenker” was translated by Hane as “Kangaeru Kikaitachi.” The book examines what it means for machines to learn, how AI systems make decisions, and the consequences of delegating human judgment to technology. It connects explanations of technical developments with questions about ethics and responsibility.
