Naoko Hamaura is a Japanese translator of nonfiction on society, the environment, and technology. She graduated from Kobe University’s Faculty of Cross-Cultural Studies and completed a master’s degree in gender and development at the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex. After working on international cooperation projects, she moved into translation. Vili Lehdonvirta’s “Cloud Empires” examines how digital platforms acquired forms of governing power resembling those of states. A history of sea-level measurement considers how scientists and societies established a reference point called zero. Her translation of Andrew Leland’s “The Country of the Blind” also connects institutions and technologies with individual lived experience.
