Barbara W. Barbara W. Tuchman (1912–1989) was an American historian and author, widely regarded as one of the twentieth century's greatest writers of narrative history. After graduating from Radcliffe College, she worked as a journalist before turning to historical writing, specializing in diplomatic history, military history, and medieval Europe. Celebrated for combining meticulous scholarship with compelling storytelling, she won the Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction twice: first in 1963 for "The Guns of August," her acclaimed account of the outbreak of World War I, and again in 1972 for "Stilwell and the American Experience in China, 1911–45." Her other notable books include "The Proud Tower," "A Distant Mirror: The Calamitous 14th Century," and "The March of Folly: From Troy to Vietnam."
