Barbara Kingsolver (born 1955) is an American novelist, poet, and essayist. After studying biology at DePauw University, she worked as a science writer before becoming a full-time author. Widely regarded as one of the leading voices in contemporary American literature, her fiction explores environmental issues, social justice, race, gender, family, and rural communities. Her novel The Poisonwood Bible was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, while Demon Copperhead (2022), a contemporary reimagining of David Copperfield set in Appalachia, won the 2023 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction as well as the Women's Prize for Fiction.
