Shusaku Endo (1923–1996) was a Japanese novelist from Tokyo. He spent part of his childhood in Dalian, then under Japanese rule, and was baptized as a Catholic at the age of twelve after returning to Japan. After studying French literature at Keio University, he continued his studies in France and made the tension between Western Christianity and Japan’s religious culture a central subject of his fiction and criticism. He received the Akutagawa Prize for “Shiroi Hito” in 1955 and Japan’s Order of Culture in 1995. His representative novel, “Silence,” which won the Tanizaki Junichiro Prize, follows the Portuguese priest Rodrigues as he enters Japan during the persecution of Christians, witnesses believers being tortured, and is forced to decide whether to renounce his faith to end their suffering while confronting the silence of God.
