S. A. Cosby (born 1973) is an American writer whose crime fiction examines race, class, and family life in the South. He is from southeastern Virginia and worked as a bouncer, construction worker, retail manager, and funeral-home assistant. A Los Angeles Public Library interview connected these experiences with his writing; Cosby explained that reading Walter Mosley helped him realize he could write about the people and places he knew. “Blacktop Wasteland” (2020), published in Japanese as “Kuroki Koya no Hate,” follows a former getaway driver who has tried to leave crime behind and support his family through an auto repair business. Financial pressure draws him back into a robbery, bringing his past into conflict with his responsibilities as a father. The novel won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. “Razorblade Tears” (2021), translated as “Hoho ni Kanashimi o Kizame,” joins a Black father and a white father after their married sons are murdered. Their pursuit of vengeance confronts them with racism, homophobia, and their failure to accept their sons. “King of Ashes” (2025), published in Japanese as “Hai no O” in 2026, centers on Roman, a financial professional who returns to his Virginia hometown after his father is injured in a crash. His family’s crematorium, his brother’s debts to criminals, his sister’s burden of keeping the business running, and their mother’s disappearance become intertwined. The novel traced how attempts to protect a family could draw its members deeper into violence.
