Evan Friss is an American historian and a professor of history at James Madison University. He earned his doctorate in history from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York and specializes in American urban and public history. “The Cycling City: Bicycles and Urban America in the 1890s” examines how the late-nineteenth-century bicycle boom transformed urban roads, transportation, consumer culture, and social life. “On Bicycles: A 200-Year History of Cycling in New York City” traces the changing place of bicycles in New York’s streets and public culture. In “The Bookshop: A History of the American Bookstore,” Friss follows American bookselling from Benjamin Franklin’s era through independent and specialty bookshops, sidewalk booksellers, Barnes & Noble, and Amazon, showing how bookstores have shaped reading habits, local communities, and political discussion. The book became a New York Times bestseller and received the 2024 Goodreads Choice Award for History and Biography.
