Esther Wojcicki is an educator and journalist whose work centers on journalism education and learning with digital technology. Educated at the University of California, Berkeley, she developed a media arts program at Palo Alto High School in California in which students produced newspapers, magazines, websites, and other media. A small class grew into a program involving hundreds of students and multiple publications. Her approach gave students responsibility for choosing stories, collaborating, and publishing for real audiences, while teachers acted as guides. She also helped launch the Google Teacher Academy. With Lance Izumi, she developed these ideas in “Moonshots in Education: Launching Blended Learning in the Classroom,” examining how face-to-face and online learning could be combined and why introducing technology also required changes in classroom culture. Drawing on her experiences as both a parent and a teacher, “How to Raise Successful People: Simple Lessons for Radical Results,” published in Japanese as “TRICK,” presented five principles: trust, respect, independence, collaboration, and kindness. Through practical examples, she described giving children responsibility, respecting their interests and choices, and guiding them at home and at school. The book was subsequently published in Britain as “How to Raise Happy and Successful Children.” For her contribution to scholastic journalism education, the Columbia Scholastic Press Association awarded her the Charles R. O’Malley Award in 2011.
