英訳 “The Defeat of the West” は2027年2月刊行予定。
Emmanuel Todd (born 1951) is a French historical demographer and anthropologist specializing in family systems. He earned his doctorate in history at the University of Cambridge and worked at France’s National Institute for Demographic Studies (INED) from 1984 until his retirement in 2017. His research connects family structures, including relations between generations and inheritance practices, with literacy, fertility, and mortality to examine changes in political ideologies, religion, economies, and international relations. Signs of decline within Soviet society are investigated in “The Final Fall: An Essay on the Decomposition of the Soviet Sphere,” originally published in French as “La Chute finale” in 1976. Drawing attention to rising infant mortality and other indicators, Todd identified social and economic deterioration beneath the Soviet Union’s military power and anticipated its eventual collapse. The foundations of American global dominance are questioned in “After the Empire: The Breakdown of the American Order,” originally published as “Après l’empire.” Todd examines trade deficits, dependence on foreign capital, and domestic inequality, arguing that military strength can coexist with economic dependence and weakening social cohesion. The war in Ukraine provides the starting point for “La Défaite de l’Occident,” published in Japanese as “Seiyo no Haiboku: Nihon to Sekai ni Nani ga Okiru no ka.” Todd interprets Western decline through changes in religion, education, industrial capacity, and demography. He offers his own account of Europe’s subordination to American strategic priorities and Russia’s ability to sustain state capacity under sanctions. The English translation, “The Defeat of the West,” is scheduled for publication in February 2027.
