Emmanuel Reibel (born 1976) is a musicologist whose research examines relationships between music and literature, Romantic aesthetics and the history of discourse about music. His name appears in Japanese as both エマニュエル・レイベル and エマニュエル・レベル. He studied at the École normale supérieure and the Paris Conservatoire, obtained the agrégation in classics and earned a doctorate in literature. After working at Paris Ouest Nanterre, he taught musicology at the École normale supérieure de Lyon and took over an aesthetics class at the Paris Conservatoire in 2021. He directs Dictéco, an online dictionary devoted to composers’ writings, and has given lectures and presentations combining commentary and performance for institutions including the Paris Opera and the Philharmonie de Paris. He received the François-Victor Noury Prize in 2014. Nature et musique, published in Japanese as ナチュール 自然と音楽, explored musical relationships with nature through love, belief and awe, ranging from imitation and landscape depiction to soundscapes and electronic music. His conversations with Jean-Guihen Queyras in Bach : les Suites en partage, translated as バッハ《無伴奏チェロ組曲》との旅, linked the cellist’s experience with musical analysis and practical questions of phrasing, ornamentation, tempo and strings. Les Musiciens romantiques : Fascinations parisiennes appeared in Japanese as 音楽都市パリの誕生. Focusing on Paris in the 1830s–1850s, it situated musicians’ encounters within concerts, salons and the opera house, examining the relationships between urban change and musical culture.
