Emma Cline (born 1989) is an American novelist and short-story writer from California. Her fiction and essays have appeared in publications including The New Yorker, The Paris Review, and Granta. She made her debut as a novelist with "The Girls" in 2016, which won the Shirley Jackson Award and was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle's John Leonard Prize and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. Set in California in the late 1960s, "The Girls" follows fourteen-year-old Evie Boyd as her fascination with the older and seemingly liberated Suzanne draws her into a cult-like commune. Loosely inspired by the crimes associated with Charles Manson and his followers, the novel shifts attention away from the charismatic male leader and toward the young women around him, exploring how loneliness, desire for recognition, and the need to belong can draw an adolescent girl toward a group moving closer to violence.
