Emily M. Bender is an American linguist and a professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Washington, where she directs the Computational Linguistics Laboratory. Her research spans syntax, computational linguistics, and the social consequences of natural-language-processing technologies. In the influential 2021 paper “On the Dangers of Stochastic Parrots,” co-authored with Timnit Gebru and others, she described large language models as “stochastic parrots” and examined their embedded biases, environmental costs, and tendency to produce plausible language without understanding its meaning. Co-authored with Alex Hanna, “The AI Con: How to Fight Big Tech’s Hype and Create the Future We Want” examines how the label “artificial intelligence” exaggerates technological capabilities while obscuring data extraction, low-paid labor, surveillance, and the automation of public services, and offers practical ways to question how and why such systems are deployed.
