Elly Griffiths is a British crime novelist whose fiction connects criminal investigations with archaeology, local folklore, literature, and the performing arts. Born Domenica de Rosa in London, she studied English at King’s College London and worked in libraries and magazines before entering publishing at HarperCollins. After four novels under her own name, she adopted her grandmother’s name for her crime fiction. “The Crossing Places” (2009) introduced forensic archaeologist Ruth Galloway, who lives on the Norfolk coast and becomes involved in an investigation linking discovered bones to a missing girl. Her husband’s change of career to archaeology and the Norfolk landscape and legends familiar from her childhood helped shape the series. She also developed mysteries featuring a detective and a magician in postwar Brighton and wrote mysteries for children set at a boarding school. In 2016 she received the Crime Writers’ Association’s Dagger in the Library for her body of work. “The Stranger Diaries,” published in Japanese as “Mishiranu Hito,” intertwined murders surrounding an English teacher with the Gothic fiction she studies. It introduced detective Harbinder Kaur and won the 2020 Edgar Award for Best Novel. In “The Frozen People” (2025), Griffiths introduced Ali Dawson, a detective who travels into the past to investigate cold cases. The novel connected a dangerous assignment in 1850s London with events in the present and received the 2026 Theakston Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year award.
