Ellen Currie (1930–2012) was an American fiction writer who worked in advertising while writing short stories. Her work appeared in The New Yorker in the 1950s, but her first published novel, Available Light (untranslated into Japanese), did not appear until 1986. In Moses Supposes (untranslated into Japanese), she turned to marriage, parenthood, and aging, finding both cruelty and unintended comedy in ordinary domestic encounters. The collection was a finalist for the 1994 National Book Award. Her stories draw on small exchanges and misunderstandings to show how complicated relationships can become even among people who know one another well.
