Elizabeth McCracken (1966–) is an American novelist and short-story writer who previously worked as a librarian and now holds the James A. Michener Chair in Fiction at the University of Texas at Austin. Her fiction portrays eccentric people living with loss and isolation, combining close observation, dry humor, and touches of the fantastic. “The Giant’s House,” about the relationship between a solitary librarian and a boy with gigantism, examines love, obsession, bodily difference, and the public gaze directed at those treated as spectacles. It was a finalist for the 1996 National Book Award for Fiction. Her collection “Thunderstruck & Other Stories” won the 2015 Story Prize.
