Elizabeth Gregory is an American scholar of gender studies and English literature. She is a professor at the University of Houston and director of its Institute for Research on Women, Gender & Sexuality. Her research examines the connections among women’s employment, reproductive choice, the timing of family formation, and economic independence. In “The Real Domestic Product: How Birth Control Built Equality (and Why the Future of the Economy and the Planet Depends on It),” she argues that access to contraception and abortion has expanded women’s participation in education, employment, and civic life while contributing to economic growth. She also warns that restricting reproductive choice risks shifting unpaid domestic and care work, as well as low-paid labor, back onto women.
