Eliyahu Moshe Goldratt (1947–2011), commonly known as Eliyahu M. Goldratt, was an Israeli physicist and management consultant who developed the Theory of Constraints (TOC). His approach focuses on identifying the factors that limit an organization’s overall performance. He earned a bachelor’s degree at Tel Aviv University and master’s and doctoral degrees at Bar-Ilan University. Beginning with production management, he extended TOC into accounting, supply chains, project management, and problem-solving, working with businesses and promoting its use through education. His best-known book, “The Goal: A Process of Ongoing Improvement,” coauthored with Jeff Cox, presents management ideas through a novel. Plant manager Alex Rogo is given three months to improve his factory’s performance or face closure. With guidance from his former teacher Jonah, he works with his colleagues to turn the operation around. The story demonstrates why improving the efficiency of each process separately does not necessarily increase the profitability of the factory as a whole. It explains how to identify bottlenecks and coordinate other operations around them to improve the flow of production. In “Critical Chain,” Goldratt applies TOC to project management. He examines why generous estimates for individual tasks can still fail to prevent missed deadlines, including the effects of delayed starts. Through a business narrative, he shifts attention from managing separate tasks to the progress of the entire project, exploring where managers should focus and how working practices can change to meet deadlines and budgets without compromising quality.
