Elaine Castillo is a Filipino American novelist and critic born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. She studied comparative literature at the University of California, Berkeley. Her debut novel, America Is Not the Heart (2018), follows Hero, a woman rebuilding her life with relatives in California after political struggle and violence in the Philippines. Its account of migration brings family history and generational differences into contact with queer love, food, work, and the everyday life of a diasporic community. In How to Read Now (2022), Castillo turned to criticism, questioning familiar claims that reading automatically produces empathy. Across literature, film, and television, the essays examine how race, class, and colonial histories shape the relationship between works and their audiences. They ask whose experiences are treated as universal and whose writing is expected to explain a culture or provide lessons in suffering. Her second novel, Moderation (2025), follows Girlie Delmundo, a Filipino American content moderator promoted into the world of virtual reality. Her family’s financial pressures and the psychological costs of reviewing harmful material intersect with the power of technology companies and a developing romance with a co-founder. Moderation was longlisted for the 2026 Women’s Prize for Fiction, and Castillo received a Whiting Award in fiction that year.
