Edward O. Thorp (1932–) is an American mathematician, investor, and hedge fund manager. He pioneered the application of probability and statistics to both gambling and finance, developing the first mathematically proven card-counting system for blackjack and later becoming an early leader in quantitative investing. Combining academic research with practical investment management, he helped lay the foundations for modern quantitative finance. His best-known book, "Beat the Dealer", introduced card counting to a wide audience and transformed the way blackjack was understood and played.
