Edward Ball (1958–) is an American journalist and nonfiction writer. His work explores slavery, race, family history, and the legacy of the American South, often drawing on his own family's past to examine the enduring consequences of slavery and white supremacy. Combining meticulous archival research with firsthand reporting, he has written a series of acclaimed narrative histories and has taught nonfiction writing at Yale University. His best-known book, Slaves in the Family, traces his family's history as major slaveholders in South Carolina while documenting his encounters with descendants of the people they enslaved. The book won the 1998 National Book Award for Nonfiction.
