Edmund Richardson is a historian of ancient Greece and classical reception, and Professor of Classics at Durham University. He completed his PhD at the University of Cambridge in 2008 and held positions at Princeton University and the University of Leeds before joining Durham’s Department of Classics and Ancient History in 2013. His research explores both the ancient world and the ways later societies have interpreted and used its legacy. In 2016, he was selected as a BBC/AHRC New Generation Thinker. “Alexandria: The Quest for the Lost City” follows Charles Masson, a nineteenth-century deserter who searched for a lost city in Afghanistan, tracing a life in which archaeological discovery became entangled with imperial espionage. Published in 2026, “Alexander: God, King, Man” draws on recent archaeological discoveries and Richardson’s translations of sources from twelve ancient languages to reconstruct Alexander the Great’s life, from his accession at twenty to his death in Babylon at thirty-two. The book was shortlisted for the 2026 Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction. Through Alexander’s campaigns, struggles to maintain power, and transformation into a divine figure, Richardson examines the person and political world behind the enduring legend.
