Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849) was an American writer, poet, and literary critic. Widely regarded as a pioneer of detective fiction, horror, and Gothic literature, he profoundly influenced the development of modern mystery and psychological fiction. His best-known story, "The Murders in the Rue Morgue," introduces C. Auguste Dupin, whose method of analytical reasoning established the foundation of the modern detective story.
