Ece Temelkuran (born 1973) is a Turkish journalist, novelist and political commentator whose work addresses democratic decline, freedom of expression and women’s experiences. Born in Izmir, she began reporting for Cumhuriyet in 1993 and graduated from Ankara University’s Faculty of Law in 1995. Her journalism examined Kurdish and Armenian issues, the women’s movement and political prisoners, while she also published poetry, prose and fiction. In 2008 she was a visiting fellow at Oxford University’s Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism. She lost her newspaper job after criticizing government repression and began writing in English after leaving Turkey in 2016. Women Who Blow on Knots, published in English in 2017, follows four women travelling from Tunisia to Lebanon. It brings questions of politics, religion and women’s freedom into a story of shared journeys and solidarity. The novel won the Edinburgh International Book Festival’s First Book Award in 2017. How to Lose a Country (2019) draws connections between populist and nationalist movements in Turkey and other countries, identifying seven stages through which democracy is undermined. Combining memoir, history and political argument, it examines how authoritarian movements change everyday language and public debate. From 2021 to 2023, Temelkuran held a fellowship at THE NEW INSTITUTE in Hamburg, working on a new vocabulary for twenty-first-century progressives. Nation of Strangers (2026) begins with her own experience of living outside her country and uses letters to other strangers to reconsider exile, migration and the meaning of home. Its research included conversations with refugees, immigrants and women living in shelters. The book was shortlisted for the Women’s Prize for Non-Fiction in 2026.
