Annie Proulx (born 1935) is an American novelist and short story writer. Before turning to fiction, she edited a local newspaper and wrote practical guides. Her early stories explored life in rural communities. In “The Shipping News,” a man moves to his family’s home in Newfoundland and gradually rebuilds his life among its residents. The novel won both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize. Her short story “Brokeback Mountain,” set in Wyoming, follows the enduring relationship between two men and was later adapted into a film. Across her fiction, Proulx makes local landscapes, work, and the demands of everyday survival central to her characters’ lives.
