Jiro Asada (born 1951) is a Japanese novelist. After serving in the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force and working in the apparel industry, he began his literary career with "Torarete Tamaruka!" in 1991. His work ranges from historical novels about the final years of the Tokugawa shogunate and modern China to underworld entertainment and stories in which the living encounter the dead. Across these genres, he portrays people bound by duty and obligation while carrying loss and regret. His best-known work, "Poppoya," received the Naoki Prize in 1997 and is the title story of an eight-story collection. It follows Otomatsu, the stationmaster at a remote Hokkaido terminus facing closure, who remained at his post even after the deaths of his young daughter and wife. As retirement and the end of the railway line approach, a series of mysterious girls appear at the station, compelling him to confront the life he devoted to the railway and what his devotion cost his family.
