Hiroshi Aramata (born 1947) is a Japanese natural-history researcher, fantasy-literature scholar, novelist and translator. Born in Tokyo, he graduated from Keio University’s Faculty of Law and worked as a computer programmer while translating and writing about English-language fantasy literature. His best-known novel sequence, “Teito Monogatari” (a tale of the imperial capital), combines modern Tokyo’s history with geomancy, occult traditions and the struggle against Yasunori Kato, a supernatural antagonist intent on destroying the city. It won the Nihon SF Taisho Award in 1987. Aramata also received the 1989 Suntory Prize for Social Sciences and Humanities for the fish volume of “Sekai Daihakubutsu Zukan,” an illustrated natural-history encyclopedia. Drawing on historical illustrations from Japan and the West, the work brings scientific knowledge together with mythology, folklore and cultural history. Across fiction and scholarship, he explores how people observe, depict and imagine the natural world and its mysteries.
