Ryo Asai (born 1989) is a Japanese novelist from Gifu Prefecture. He began his literary career after winning the Shosetsu Subaru New Writer Award in 2009. Examining university students brought together by their search for employment, “Nanimono,” a novel about the desire to become somebody, contrasts carefully presented public identities with private judgments of others. Interviews and social media expose anxiety, jealousy and the need for recognition. The novel received the Naoki Prize in 2013. Following people whose desires are difficult to disclose, “Seiyoku” questions what prevailing ideas of normality and diversity can accommodate. Through intersecting perspectives involving family, education and the justice system, it examines lives that resist familiar categories. The book won the Renzaburo Shibata Prize in 2021. Exploring how devotion becomes part of the fandom economy, “In za Megachachi,” a novel whose title means “In the Megachurch,” follows a man involved in managing an idol group, a university student seeking emotional refuge and a woman who supported a stage actor. Their experiences reveal how narratives that create connection can also direct judgment and behavior. The novel won the Japan Booksellers’ Award in 2026. Across these works, Asai examines what people overlook when defining themselves socially or assuming that they understand someone else.
