Sawako Ariyoshi (1931–1984) was a Japanese novelist and one of the leading literary voices of postwar Japan. Her fiction explored social issues, history, and traditional culture with remarkable insight, often addressing topics such as aging, environmental pollution, healthcare, and the changing roles of women well before they became central public concerns. Through compelling storytelling, she brought complex social issues to a wide readership. Her best-known novel, "The Twilight Years", was a pioneering work that portrayed dementia and family caregiving, helping to raise public awareness of Japan's aging society.
