Noriko Arai (born 1962) is a Japanese mathematician and artificial intelligence researcher. She holds a PhD in science from the Tokyo Institute of Technology and is a professor at the National Institute of Informatics, director of its Research Center for Community Knowledge, and head of the Education for a Bright Future research institute. Her work covers mathematical logic, artificial intelligence, and information-sharing systems. Beginning in 2011, she led the Todai Robot Project, which tested whether an AI system could pass the University of Tokyo entrance examination, and later developed the Reading Skill Test. Her principal work, “AI vs. Kyokasho ga Yomenai Kodomotachi” (“AI versus Children Who Cannot Read Textbooks”), contrasts the exam performance of AI with evidence that many Japanese students struggle to understand textbook sentences accurately, identifying reading comprehension as a central educational challenge in the age of AI.
