Bunpei Aoyama (born 1948) is a Japanese writer of historical fiction. After graduating from Waseda University’s School of Political Science and Economics, he worked for an economics-related publishing company for eighteen years and later became a freelance writer. In 2011, he received the Matsumoto Seicho Prize for "Shirakashi no Ki no Shita de." Set mainly within samurai society during the middle and late Edo period, his fiction portrays warriors struggling to find a purpose in an age of peace and women confronting the practical realities of family life. His best-known work, "Tsuma o Metoraba," received the Naoki Prize in 2016. This collection of six stories explores marriage, separation, and misunderstandings between husbands and wives, contrasting men constrained by rank and social convention with women who face their circumstances with resilience and resourcefulness.
