Isaac Deutscher (1907–1967) A Polish-born British historian and journalist known for his studies of the Russian Revolution, the Soviet Union, and the lives of Joseph Stalin and Leon Trotsky. A member of the Polish Communist Party in his youth, he was expelled after criticizing Stalinism and moved to Britain shortly before the Second World War. After working as a journalist and commentator on Soviet and international affairs, he devoted himself increasingly to historical writing. His three-volume biography of Trotsky—"The Prophet Armed," "The Prophet Unarmed," and "The Prophet Outcast"—traces Trotsky's role in the Russian Revolution and the creation of the Red Army, his defeat in the struggle with Stalin, his exile from the Soviet Union, and his eventual assassination in Mexico, setting his life against the transformation of the revolution and the Soviet state.
