Isaac Butler is a writer, theatre director and historian of performance. He earned an MFA in creative nonfiction at the University of Minnesota, directed productions across the United States, and taught theatre history and performance at the New School and elsewhere. With Dan Kois, he wrote The World Only Spins Forward, an oral history of the creation and staging of Angels in America. The Method followed the development of modern acting from Stanislavski's experiments to their transformation in the United States by figures including Lee Strasberg. Connecting training with theatrical and cinematic practice, it won the National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction. In The Perfect Moment (2026), Butler turned to the battles over contemporary art and censorship at the end of the 1980s. Through controversies involving artists such as Robert Mapplethorpe, the book examined how religion, public arts funding and conservative political mobilization shaped America's culture wars.
