Irvin D. Yalom (born 1931) is an American psychiatrist and writer specializing in existential and group psychotherapy. Born in Washington, D.C., to parents who had emigrated from Russia, he received his medical degree from Boston University in 1956 and completed psychiatric training at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He subsequently developed his clinical and teaching career at Stanford University, where he is professor emeritus of psychiatry. His work has emphasized individual experience and the relationship between patient and therapist. Alongside professional texts, he has used clinical narratives and novels to explore questions arising in psychotherapy. “The Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy” organized research and clinical examples around interpersonal relationships within groups and the factors that facilitate therapeutic change. Later editions were coauthored with Molyn Leszcz. In “Existential Psychotherapy,” he brought clinical experience into dialogue with philosophy and literature, organizing the field around four central concerns: death, freedom, isolation, and meaninglessness. “A Matter of Death and Life,” written with his wife, the scholar of French literature Marilyn Yalom, began after her cancer diagnosis. At her suggestion, they wrote alternating chapters about illness, mortality, and their life together. After Marilyn’s death, he continued the book alone, documenting his grief and the practical and emotional changes involved in living without his lifelong companion.
