Hideaki Akamatsu is a historian of medieval Japan specializing in landed estates, village society, and the reconstruction of historical landscapes. He earned a doctorate in literature at Waseda University and taught medieval Japanese history and the interpretation of historical sources at Beppu University before serving as an associate professor in the Faculty of Business Administration at Toyohashi Sozo University. His research connects evidence from historical documents with landforms and place-names examined through fieldwork, using geographic information systems (GIS) to investigate relationships among estate institutions, local communities, and the natural environment. His Japanese-language monograph “Chusei Shoen Kukan to Zaichi Shakai” (2026) focuses on Yano estate in Harima Province, owned by Toji temple, while comparing estates including the holdings of Eizanji temple in Yamato and Oi estate in Mino. It examines estate formation, territorial organization, divisions of land, and the activities of local estate officials. Flood-related demands for reductions in annual dues and the effects of drought also form part of its analysis. By relating spatial organization to local social order, the book investigated how the estate system continued to function over the long course of the medieval period. It received the 69th Nikkei Prize for Excellent Books in Economic Science in 2026.
