アーサー・ウェイリー（Arthur Waley、1889–1966） イギリスの東洋学者、翻訳家。ケンブリッジ大学卒業後、大英博物館に勤務し、日本と中国の絵画資料の整理に携わるなかで独学で日本語と中国語を習得した。中国古典詩や『論語』『西遊記』などを英訳し、東アジアの文学を英語圏に紹介した翻訳者として知られる。なかでも紫式部『源氏物語』を英訳した "The Tale of Genji" は、平安時代の物語を流麗な英語の文学作品として伝え、『源氏物語』が世界文学として広く知られる大きな契機となった。その英訳はのちに日本語へ再翻訳され、『源氏物語 A・ウェイリー版』として刊行されている。
Arthur Waley (1889–1966) A British Orientalist and translator who played a major role in introducing classical Chinese and Japanese literature to English-speaking readers. After graduating from the University of Cambridge, he worked at the British Museum, where his work cataloguing Asian art led him to teach himself Chinese and Japanese. He translated Chinese poetry and classics as well as major works of Japanese literature. His best-known achievement, "The Tale of Genji," his English translation of Murasaki Shikibu's classic, brought the work to a wide international readership and helped establish it as a major work of world literature. Published in installments between 1925 and 1933, Waley's version became one of the most influential early translations of Japanese literature into English.
