Arthur C. Clarke (1917–2008) was a British science fiction writer, science communicator, and futurist. In novels such as “Childhood’s End” and “The City and the Stars,” he explored encounters with extraterrestrial civilizations and the long-term evolution of humanity. He developed the story of “2001: A Space Odyssey” with filmmaker Stanley Kubrick, creating a landmark work in both cinema and science fiction literature. “Rendezvous with Rama” and “The Fountains of Paradise” each won the Hugo and Nebula awards. In 1945, Clarke also proposed using satellites in geostationary orbit for global communications, combining scientific speculation with visions of humanity’s technological future.
