Arlie Russell Hochschild (born 1940) is an American sociologist. She is Professor Emerita of Sociology at the University of California, Berkeley. Her research focuses on the sociology of emotions, work, family, gender, inequality, and political polarization, and she is internationally renowned for introducing the concept of emotional labor, which has had a profound influence on sociology and related fields. Throughout her career, Hochschild has combined in-depth interviews and ethnographic fieldwork to examine how social and economic change shapes people's work, family life, and emotional experiences. Through both her academic scholarship and widely read nonfiction, she has become one of the leading interpreters of contemporary American society, illuminating the human dimensions of social and political change.
