Anthony Hope（アンソニー・ホープ、1863–1933） イギリスの小説家、劇作家。本名アンソニー・ホープ・ホーキンズ（Anthony Hope Hawkins）。オックスフォード大学ベリオール・カレッジで古典学を学び、弁護士として活動するかたわら創作を始めた。1894年に発表した『ゼンダ城の虜』（原題: "The Prisoner of Zenda"）が世界的な成功を収めたことを機に法律家を辞し、専業作家となった。架空のヨーロッパ王国を舞台にした冒険小説「ルリタニア・ロマンス」の代表的作家として知られ、その作品は数多く映画や舞台化されている。代表作『ゼンダ城の虜』（原題: "The Prisoner of Zenda"）は、架空の王国ルリタニアで王と瓜二つのイギリス人紳士が王の身代わりとなり、王位を巡る陰謀に立ち向かう冒険小説である。華麗な剣戟、宮廷の陰謀、恋愛を巧みに織り交ぜた物語は世界的なベストセラーとなり、「ルリタニア・ロマンス」という新たな文学ジャンルを確立した作品として文学史に名を残している。
Anthony Hope (1863–1933) was a British novelist and playwright, born Anthony Hope Hawkins. After studying classics at Balliol College, Oxford, he qualified as a barrister while pursuing writing in his spare time. The enormous success of "The Prisoner of Zenda" (1894) led him to abandon law and become a full-time author. He became the foremost practitioner of the "Ruritanian romance," a genre of adventure fiction set in fictional European kingdoms, and his works have been adapted repeatedly for stage, film, and television. His best-known novel, "The Prisoner of Zenda," follows an English gentleman who bears an uncanny resemblance to the king of the fictional kingdom of Ruritania and is persuaded to impersonate him to thwart a coup. Blending swashbuckling adventure, court intrigue, and romance, the novel became an international classic and established the enduring literary tradition of the Ruritanian romance.
