Anne Frank (1929–1945) was a German-born Jewish girl whose diary became one of the best-known personal accounts of the Holocaust. Her family moved to the Netherlands to escape Nazi persecution, but after the German occupation, they went into hiding in Amsterdam in 1942. Anne kept a diary during more than two years in hiding. In 1944, the hiding place was discovered, and she and the others were arrested and deported to concentration camps. She died at Bergen-Belsen in 1945. After the war, her surviving father, Otto Frank, arranged for the publication of her diary as "Het Achterhuis," later known in English as "The Diary of a Young Girl." Alongside fear, persecution, and the tensions of life in hiding, Anne recorded conflicts with her family, her developing relationships, reflections on her own character, and her ambition to become a writer, leaving a detailed account of adolescence under extraordinary circumstances.
